Volunteer Potato Control in Vining Peas
Toxic potato berries contaminate vining pea produce and can lead to crop rejection.

There are EAMU’s for flumioxazine products – Sumimax (1476/20), Guillotine (1445/20) and Digital (1470/20). They can suppress volunteer potatoes and help prevent flower and berry formation.

It is recommended that flumioxazine be used from 4 – 5 nodes to flowers visible, up to a maximum dose of 100mls/ha and a harvest interval of 42 days is required.
It has some residual activity so soil moisture will help its efficacy, but in the main it is a contact material which should have some activity on several broad-leaved weed species such as cleavers, charlock, chickweed, pansy, red dead nettle and oil seed rape.

Hints for use

  • Flumioxazine applications of 50mls, 75mls or 100mls/ha caused increasing levels of damage to the potatoes but there was little difference in terms of damage to the pea crop. Good wax levels on the crop are crucial to maintaining this tolerance.
  • Avoid applying flumioxazine if the foliage is wet as this can lead to increased crop damage.
  • Do not use flumioxazine with an adjuvant or tank mix it with any other product.
  • Residue, particularly from previous ‘well wetted’ products, may cause increased levels of crop damage if tanks are not cleaned adequately.
  • Rainfall shortly after application may enhance any residual activity but may increase the level of crop damage.
  • Work has shown that there appears to be little difference in varietal sensitivity. Wet foliage at application or rainfall after appears more important.
  • A copy of the relevant EAMU notice must be obtained before using flumioxazine products for volunteer potato control in vining peas.
